I was commissioned for a different sort of tarot reading on the weekend and I enjoyed it so much I might add it to my regular menu of options. Two BFFs who have been friends since their adult children were toddlers live in different cities now, but were getting together for a girls’ weekend. They wanted tarot readings, but opted for combined readings together instead of each one having a private reading.
First, I did an individual reading for each person, but with the other person present. I could see how this could only work with someone you truly loved and trusted, but it was also helpful because one person was slightly more shy and anxious about tarot readings and the other had grown up with tarot. The shy person relaxed as her friend suggested interpretations and ideas and soon the shy person was much more animated and actively participating in the storytelling.
Then I did a reading for the two of them together, a sort of “state of our friendship” spread. I used a dyadic cross (always one of my favourites) and had them alternate pulling cards out of the deck to fill the spread. It was fun to see the story of their friendship emerge, and they were clearly thrilled with it.
It took about an hour to get that far, and we were all having such fun that by the end I showed them my favourite way to read tarot for myself – the simple act of concentrating on a question or issue at hand and pulling a single card for insight. When I asked the tarot to give me one card to sum up the afternoon, I laughed when I pulled the 10 of Swords. Overkill. That’s when I knew I was done and it was time to go home.
You’d need to be with someone you can be completely honest and vulnerable with to have a joint tarot reading like this, but it was clear these two had been through some hard times and some great times together, and reading for them both was an honour and a fun way to spend a bit of time on a winter afternoon. If you’d like to book a tarot reading for yourself and your best friend, I’d love to hear from you!
