A good friend invited me to do readings at an informal housewarming party this past weekend. She framed the invitation as a “Tarot and Tea” party and I loved that. She invited a handful of friends from different areas of her life, laid out some snacks (including an applewood smoked cheddar that I am still thinking about many hours later!) and set up a small tarot table just outside the range of the conversation bubble in the main room.
Most of the women had nothing in common except an affection for the host, and most had never had a tarot reading before the party. Everyone took a turn at having a reading while the rest of the group chatted, and I very much enjoyed getting that little glimpse into everyones’ lives that tarot offers. That’s one of my favourite things about reading tarot cards with someone, especially someone I’ve never met before – that moment of shared journey and collaborative storytelling, where we look at the cards together to pluck out the narrative.
I think we’re still realizing, in the long tail of healing our way out of the pandemic, how important these informal social gatherings are to our emotional well-being. In almost all of the parties and workshops I’ve done recently, the topic has come up of how good it feels just to sit with people again, and to connect with one another.
If you’re looking for a fun activity to pass a Saturday afternoon with your besties (and some snacks — don’t forget the snacks!) consider a crafting party or a tarot party. I’ll bring everything you need – you just supply the table and chairs. And, erm, snacks – in case I forgot to mention that.
