I follow the Felt and Fibre Studio blog for inspiration. A few of the members belong to the Ottawa Spinner’s and Weaver’s Guild, of which I am a member. They have quarterly challenges for projects, and the one for this summer was “home.”
It took me no time at all to decide that my muse, the stately and iconic Watson’s Mill just around the corner from here, would make a great subject. I’ve admired it and photographed it in all seasons, but it really shows off in autumn.
I love how it turned out. I needle-felted the basic layout, and then used embroidery floss to embellish some extra details. I sort of ran out of ideas for the leafy trees on either side of the Mill, so I’m a little less enamoured by that bit. But I’m super new to embroidering on felt, so the whole thing was a bit of an experiment.

So it’s not exactly photorealistic, but it was hard for me to wander too far in my interpretation from what I actually see. That will be a challenge for me going ahead, I think.
As an experiment, though, I’m pleased with how it came out. And any project where I learn something new is automatically a win.
