I’ve been having moderate success in my ongoing project to feed and hopefully make friends with the local crows. Most days when out for a walk, I’ve been able to find and feed at least two or three crows. They seem to be getting more comfortable with me – I can now stand a respectful distance away and watch them collect the peanuts I’ve thrown, and sometimes instead of snatching up the peanuts and flying away, they’ll eat them where they’ve been tossed with me watching. It’s fun to watch them pry open the shells to get the nuts out!
Earlier this week, we had an intense couple of spring-like days, and I was almost late for a meeting because I was having so much fun feeding a small gathering of crows. I tried my hand at making an Instagram reel to show my progress, as the crows are getting bolder:
I was doing a bit of reading on crow behaviour, and it sounds like eventually they will start to recognize me. Did you know that corvids are considered one of the most intelligent animals, with their intelligence on par with chimpanzees? And they have strong social and family bonds.
My husband, whom I always call Beloved online, has absolutely and completely forbidden me from raising backyard chickens. But he can’t stop me from befriending the local corvids!
